Quickie Makeup Tips

May 24th, 2008

Here are some good quick makeup tips which I picked up from watching TriciaSawyer.tv. Her tips are directed at newbie Makeup Artists but I think the lessons can be applied by non artists as well.

Quick Tip #1 - “Never judge your makeup until you have looked at it from behind the camera lens”

About 3 years ago, I had organised glamour photography for me and my partner. The package included makeup and photography. During the process, the makeup artist applied thick makeup on my face (appropriate for the black and white photo results we requested). At the time of the sitting, I was aghast at my garish look . However, after seeing the first few test shots, I quickly changed my mind as my face in the pictures turned out completely different. Not the clown-like perception I got from just looking at my reflection in the mirror.

If you can, take a few quick snaps after applying your makeup (with and without flash). This will give you a more accurate over all picture (of how well the result is or whether you need extra retouching).

Quick Tip #2 - “Step back”

When we apply makeup, we often have our face inches away from the mirror and only step away and view ourselves at the very end. It is good practice to pull back at least an arm’s length away, check and analyse how you look so far and then to go back up close and continue applying your makeup. Do this regularly through out the process of your makeup application.

Quick Tip #3 - “Always Bring a Mirror”

I must drive my partner, sister and friends crazy each time we go out as I’m forever asking them, “Do I have panda eyes?” or “Is there anything stuck between my teeth?” Carry a compact mirror in your hand bag that way you can confidently ‘meet-and-greet’ and roam around.

Quick Tip #7 - “Toothpicks and Q-tips”

What’s worse than finding our makeup askew or food bits between our teeth? Not having any tools to correct them! Keep these, along with your compact mirror and other essentials, in a small pouch/purse before popping them in your hand bag. That way they remain clean, tidy and do not get lost in your bag.
